How to Use This Canvas Grade Calculator
This tool does not connect to your Canvas account. Open one course, copy the visible grade details, then use the current grade calculator or final grade calculator depending on the question you need answered.
Current Grade Calculation
Step 1: Open Your Canvas Grades Page
Open Canvas, choose one course, and go to Grades. Work with one course at a time so assignments, quizzes, discussions, and exams do not get mixed across classes.
Step 2: Copy and Paste Grades or Type Scores
Paste Canvas grade text for a quick points-based estimate, or enter assignment group scores manually when your course uses category weights.
Step 3: Set Assignment Group Weights
If your syllabus shows groups such as Homework 30%, Quizzes 20%, Projects 25%, and Final Exam 25%, enter those weights so the weighted grade matches the course structure.
Final Exam Planning
Step 4: How to Calculate Canvas Grades Manually
For weighted Canvas grades, multiply each group score by its weight, add those weighted scores, then divide by the total entered weight.
Step 5: What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam
Enter your current grade, final exam weight, and target course grade. The calculator estimates the final exam score needed and flags targets above 100%.
Step 6: Interpret Your Letter Grade and GPA
Use the letter grade as a planning reference only. GPA conversion depends on your school, instructor, and syllabus grading scale, so compare the result with your official course rules.
Read the result before you act on it
The calculator gives a planning estimate, not an official transcript result. Use the references below to interpret the number, then compare it with your syllabus and instructor rules.

A realistic weighted-course example
Many Canvas courses do not treat every score equally. In this sample course, smaller weekly work and larger exams each carry a different share of the course total.
Estimated B+ range from the sample category weights.
How to Weight Grades in Canvas (Manual Formula)
The Canvas weighted grade formula is common to most academic grading systems: multiply each assignment group score by its group weight, add the weighted values together, then divide by the total weight currently active in your course.
Final % = ((Group 1 Score x Group 1 Weight) + (Group 2 Score x Group 2 Weight) + ...) / Total Weight
- Canvas weighted grade: use assignment group weights from your syllabus or Canvas gradebook.
- Points-based grade: add earned points, add possible points, then divide earned by possible.
- Final exam score needed: your target grade minus the current course grade portion, divided by the final exam weight.
Why Canvas can show a different number
A grade estimate is only as accurate as the visible rules you enter. Canvas may apply course settings that are hard to see from the student grade page.
- Hidden or unpublished assignments may not be included yet.
- Dropped lowest scores, extra credit, and late penalties can change totals.
- Some courses calculate grades only from graded assignments.
- Letter grade ranges depend on your school's grading scale.
Common Canvas Grading Mistakes
If your calculated grade does not match Canvas, check these common grading mistakes before assuming the calculator is wrong.
Assignment group weights do not total 100%
Canvas weighted assignment groups usually add up to 100%. Missing a group can change the final estimate.
Hidden or unpublished Canvas assignments
Unpublished or hidden grades may not appear in your Canvas total until your instructor releases them.
Dropped lowest scores are not included
Some courses drop the lowest quiz or assignment score, which can make manual calculations look lower than Canvas.
Late penalties
Late deductions may be applied after a score is entered, depending on the assignment policy.
Extra credit
Extra credit can push a grade above the expected category average and may not fit a simple percentage model.
Different grading scales
Letter grade cutoffs vary by school, instructor, and syllabus grading scheme.
Real student decisions this page helps with
The goal is not just to show a number. It is to help you decide how much effort the next exam, project, or assignment really needs.
You want to know if an A is still possible
Enter your current grade and final exam weight to see whether your target grade is reachable.
You need to protect your current grade
Test different final exam scores and see how much room you have before your course grade changes.
Canvas and your manual math disagree
Compare weighted groups, hidden assignments, dropped scores, and extra credit to find the likely cause.
